It’s hard work portraying an effortless performance
Being George Clooney in a George Clooney movie is a wise place to start if you are George Clooney. A crushingly obvious truth, I suppose. But a rarely understood aspect of movie-star acting is range — and that an actor may appreciate his own range and use it to his advantage is even less understood, which (thus far) has saved us from Clooney as Hamlet or Willy Loman. Instead, we get that stoic brow, those bedroom eyes, the constant hint of a smirk and an effortless cool. He may veer an inch toward gravitas, or an inch toward silliness, but he’s always within a narrow range.

George Clooney and his girlfriend Elisabetta Canalis were a little camera shy as they left Kazu Sushi in Studio City, CA. The couple were on a double date with Emily Blunt and John Krasinski. (Thanks to Candy for the headsup!)
George Clooney: Before He Was Famous
Exclusive: Father Nick Clooney on Mega-Famous Son’s Childhood, Awkward Stage
By KATIE THOMSON and LAUREN SHER
March 2, 2010— From a Special Forces soldier in 1999’s “Three Kings,” an adventurous sea captain in “The Perfect Storm,” a suave con artist Danny Ocean in “Oceans 11,” to CIA agent in the political thriller “Syriana,” he’s transformed himself into countless leading roles.
“I was just as stunned as anybody watching it, to see how he did that,” father Nick Clooney said. “He undertakes another character and I said, where’d he get that?”
George Clooney is nominated for best actor for his role as corporate hatchet-man Ryan Bingham in “Up in the Air.” It’s the star’s fifth Academy Award nomination. He won best supporting actor in 2005 for “Syriana.”
But before he became one of Hollywood’s biggest stars, the Oscar-winning actor was another nerdy-looking kid in glasses. People magazine’s two-time choice for “Sexiest Man Alive” went through an awkward stage in middle school like everyone else.
“George and his glasses, an experiment that did not work out,” his dad joked.
Vera Farmiga says it would be ”impossible” for an actress not to have chemistry with George Clooney, who she stars with in ‘Up In The Air’.
George Clooney has “chemistry” with all his female co-stars.
The Hollywood hunk – who appears alongside Anna Kendrick and Vera Farmiga in ‘Up In The Air’ – has an automatic connection with all of his screen lovers, who can’t help but be attracted to him.
Vera – who plays his screen lover Alex – said: “I’ll tell you, it’s impossible not to have chemistry with George Clooney.
“He’s a goofball. He’s a clown. It’s just so good to be in his presence, and as a scene partner, anything goes. It’s a real circus with him on set. It’s carefree and loving and warm.”
Vera’s colleague Anna – who portrays businesswoman Natalie – has also spoken out about George’s flirtatious ways, admitting she was initially “terrified” of him but he soon put her at ease.
She told Empire magazine: “During the camera test he was making fun of my hair. If it was anybody else that you’d just met, you’d be like, ‘What’s this guy’s problem?’ But it’s George Clooney. Obviously, he is really intimidating as a sort of iconic figure. Really terrifying.
“Then the second that you meet him properly, you know you’re going to feel that he’s a normal guy in a matter of days. He is one of the most famous people on the planet, but he has a real talent for making you feel like you’ve known him forever.”

Marrying George Clooney: Confessions from a Midlife Crisis by Amy Ferris (Seal Press, 2009) $16.95
Not all authors can combine humor, heartbreak, candidness, and the ability to tell a great story, but Amy Ferris does this. In her new memoir, Marrying George Clooney: Confessions from a Midlife Crisis, she shares the details of her own mid-life menopause, quitting smoking after 32 years, married life, as well as the having to care for her mother who is suffering from severe dementia.
The book begins with an insomnia-filled Amy up at 3 a.m. googling old boyfriends. How could I not love a book that offers that gem in the first chapter? Written in short vignettes, I could not put the book down once I began reading it. Each section offered a new surprise, laugh-out-loud humor, and definitely some guffaw-moments, such as the section “Ragtime,” which may have you asking the males in your life some intimate questions to the poignant section “Kathy,” about the death of her best friend.
Ferris’ book does what many other memoirs don’t do, it tells the truth. Not just the good stuff, but the complex emotions we feel and the ridiculousness of daily life happening around us. Ferris is not afraid to be candid. She shares her private thoughts as well as her nighttime fears from believing she has some incurable disease to answering an email at night to a friend’s concerns about death in saying she’s “more afraid of being forgotten. Her honesty offers a calmness to the reader in that we are not alone in our thoughts and feelings.
The book is unique in its format—different fonts, font sizes, italics or boldness throughout its pages. At first, I thought this layout would be distracting while I read the book, but what I realized was how the quirkiness of the book’s appearance only adds to the anecdotes Ferris tells and mirrors the distinctiveness of her writing and voice.
Ferris is wise, hilarious, and has successfully created a book that draws the reader into her world of junk drawers, insomnia, and the intricacy of relationships. Marrying George Clooney was a highly satisfying read from beginning to end and I would add that it was definitely the best and funniest memoir I read all year. Highly recommend.

From googling old boyfriends to researching obscure and fatal diseases on the web; from scouting five-star spa destinations to having angry, bitter, e-mail exchanges with her brother. She worries endlessly about her husband, relies heavily on Ambien, and tries to arrange care via the Internet for her mother (who has both severe dementia and a massive love-bubble crush on Jesus Christ)—all while refraining from lighting up just one more cigarette. Here’s a real quick Betta Update. Seems the gossip mills have been rampant with rumors of George selling the Villa and buying a new island to please Miss Betta. Apparently she’s getting tired of the Paps hanging around the place. George set that rumor to rest with this quote
“To complete the news cycle: I am not buying an island and am not selling my house in Italy. The story was made up, then picked up and now denied. End of another riveting day of false news,”
But the Pap’s haven’t stopped Betta from her work. According to this site she’s is in talks to appear in a recurring role on the third season of TNT’s drama, Leverage and below you can see pics of her hard at work on the set of her new movie and working the rounds at Milan Fashion Week.
George Clooney’s Girlfriend In Talks to Join TV Show
George Clooney may have to start sharing the spotlight! His girlfriend, Italian model Elisabetta Canalis, is in talks to appear in a recurring role on the third season of TNT’s drama, Leverage, a source tells UsMagazine.com. “She’s very excited about the part as well as the chance to break into American television,” the source tells Us. Canalis — an Italian TV personality who has had a few acting gigs in her native country — met with the show’s producers in January to discuss the potential role, which would have her act as a mysterious international secret agent. According to the source, Canalis, 31, has Clooney, 48, to thank for the potential gig. His good friend, Richard Kind, guest stars on Leverage’s second season finale (which airs Wednesday), and helped her connect with the show’s producers. “He told her what a great experience it was and how much he enjoyed it,” the source says. “So when the opportunity came up, she was thrilled.” Although she currently resides in Italy, she is making plans to come stateside to shoot her scenes. “She knows she’ll be over here to be with George at the Oscars so she’s hoping to shoot some of her part then,” the source tells Us. Leverage’s season finale airs Wednesday at 10 p.m. EST on TNT. The next season is scheduled to premiere this summer.

AUGUSTA — Augusta native and international film star George Clooney is heading for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Awards, again.
Clooney was nominated Tuesday for a best actor Oscar trophy for his work in the movie “Up in the Air,” in which he plays a frequent flyer junkie, traveling first class while crossing the country as a corporate axe man to downsize companies.
Clooney’s father, Nick Clooney, a former news broadcaster and columnist, is proud of his son and his performances.
George’s mother Nina Clooney, Kentucky Film Commission chairperson, attended the Hollywood premier of “Up in the Air” with George and later viewed it with Nick.
“It was a great and subtle performance,” Nick Clooney said on Tuesday after learning of the nomination. “(George) keeps growing as an actor. It was a stunning performance by him and the other actors.”
A graduate of Augusta High School, George Clooney broadened his acting resume from reoccurring roles in television situation comedies to the heart-throb surgeon on the medical drama “ER.”
Entering motion pictures, Clooney quickly established himself as a leading man.
People magazine labeled him “The Sexiest Man Alive” twice.
Clooney’s versatility and an adventurous nature has continued to bring his acting, and directing ventures acclaim.
“Most of us, in our careers, achieve a plateau where we are comfortable staying. We settle into what is comfortable,” Nick Clooney said. “George is always stretching the limits and taking chances. In that way he continues to grow.”
