A professional who specializes in “career transition counseling” (a euphemism for firing people) looks to accomplish his two main goals in life: to accumulate 1 million frequent flier miles, and to land a job at a mysterious management company called MythTech.

George Clooney has signed on to star in “Up in the Air,” an adaptation of the Walter Kirn novel that Jason Reitman adapted and will direct for DreamWorks.

Clooney will play a ruthless human resources exec who becomes fixated on notching his millionth frequent flyer mile. It’s a Pyrrhic victory, considering that his time away from home has left him with no life.
