“Goats” casting call held Saturday.
People came out in droves for the “Men Who Stare At Goats,” casting call on Saturday, held at La Quinta Inn and Suites.
The movie, which stars George Clooney, is set to film in Roswell from Nov. 17 to 19.
According to casting director Elizabeth Gabel, almost 1,000 people auditioned for the role of movie “extra,” and only 500 spots were available.
“I didn’t realize how many talented, good-looking people there were in Roswell,” Gabel said after a long day of analyzing auditions. “We are really fortunate to have such a good selection for the roles we need.”
People began lining up at the La Quinta Inn and Suites around 9 a.m. Saturday, but the casting call didn’t officially begin until 10:30 a.m. Most people waited in line for an average of an hour and one-half. Some came from as far as Lubbock and Albuquerque, but the majority of the people in line were local residents, including Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell student Candace Gutierrez.
“This is pretty exciting for Roswell,” Gutierrez said. “I took some drama and theater classes in high school, so I hope that helps me during the audition process.”
Some of the people waiting in line used the extra time to go over prepared monologues, and even acted out scenes with each other, to the delight of the rest of the Hollywood hopefuls.
“I think it’s funny to see some of these wanna-be actors taking this so seriously,” said Barry Marker, a resident of Carlsbad. “People just need to relax and be themselves.”
When they finally made it to the end of the line for the official auditions, some of the potential “talent” was a little disappointed.
“They didn’t tell us the casting call was just for movie extras, and, I thought Clooney was going to be here,” said Paul Alvarez, who traveled from Clovis to audition and to meet the former “ER” star. “All they did was take my picture and ask if I could work three days in a row. I was hoping for something a little more promising.”
Clooney and the rest of the cast are currently filming in Puerto Rico. It is unknown when he will arrive in Roswell for the three-day shoot.
The movie is inspired by the book of the same name, written by Jon Ronson. The action-comedy is about a reporter trying to lose himself in the romance of war after his marriage fails. He gets more than he bargains for when he meets a special forces agent, who reveals the existence of a secret, psychic military unit whose main goal is to end war as we know it. The founder of the unit has gone missing, and the trail leads to another psychic soldier, who has distorted the mission for his own nefarious ends.
The movie will be co-directed by Grant Heslov and Clooney, who formed the Smoke House movie company in 2006.
According to Gabel, New Mexico Military Institute will be one of the main scenes for production in Roswell, along with other areas of the city.
