More from MTV & George on the “Hope for Haiti” Telethon

On the Golden Globes red carpet on Sunday night (January 17), much of the talk was about usual awards-show fare — but of course there was also much said about the disastrous earthquake in Haiti and what people can do to help. George Clooney, who has teamed up with MTV Networks for the “Hope for Haiti” telethon this Friday night, discussed his work on the telethon, all donations from which will directly benefit Oxfam America, Partners in Health, Red Cross, UNICEF and Wyclef’s Yele Haiti foundation.

“We’re going to have a lot of great musicians — we’re putting them together as we speak, and then we’ll be able to release the songs on iTunes the next day, so that they’ll be a continuing ability to make money for several of the charities,” he told E! News’ Ryan Seacrest about the telethon. Performers and more details will be announced in the coming days.

“We do [such charity events] when there’s an immediate need,” he continued. “It’s happened a few times: 9/11 we did it, and [after the 2004 tsunami in Indonesia] we did it. [Hurricane] Katrina, some people did a telethon. It’s a way and a good time to focus a lot of attention when … this is a very difficult time for people to be giving, so it just shows how compassionate people are.”

MTV Networks‘ “Hope for Haiti” is a global telethon set to air commercial-free across ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CNN, BET, the CW, HBO, MTV, VH1 and CMT on Friday, January 22, at 8 p.m. ET/PT. The telethon will be hosted by Clooney in Los Angeles, Wyclef Jean in New York and CNN’s Anderson Cooper in Haiti.
