Oceans apart? Not these two

LOS ANGELES — One is a confirmed bachelor; the other has a brood of six.

One burps babies on his massive estate in France, while the other has been seen with a few babes at his pad in Lake Como.

Both are keen on saving the world, from New Orleans to Darfur.

Clooney.

Pitt.

Oh, they also work together in hit movies. And now maybe the fourth time will be the charm for Hollywood’s most lasting bromance.

Pals George Clooney and star for the Coen brothers in the new film “.” They’re easygoing actors, hardly burned by an impudent question.

Will Clooney have a brood of kids like the Jolie-Pitts? “I’m shocked that this has come up again,” he says. “Actually, I’m going to get married and have a child today.”

If so, he can ask his famed friend for a little diapering advice. Besides his four other children, Pitt now is the parent of nine-week-old twins Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline. “I want an entire soccer team,” he jokes.

Between 4 a.m. feedings, Pitt, 44, also makes time for movies including “,” directed by the Coen brothers, who are on top of the A list after their Oscar win last year for “No Country for Old Men.”

In “,” the memoir of an ousted CIA operative (John Malkovich) mistakenly is found by two dolty gym employees (Pitt and Frances McDormand) who decide to exploit what’s in their sweaty hands. Can you say extortion? Tilda Swinton is Malkovich’s wife, while George Clooney is her lover.

The film was a chance for friends and “Ocean’s Eleven” co-stars Pitt and Clooney to take your bud to work.

“I don’t even really like the guy,” Clooney says, setting the record straight. “I think he personally knocked me off of some of those People Sexiest Man Alive issues, and there is no forgiveness.

“Or was that Matt Damon?” Clooney mulls over. “Either way, Brad has taken the crown from me.”

Pitt prefers to take the high road.

“It’s a mutual admiration society,” Pitt says of working with the guy who has been proclaimed The Last Movie Star. Of course, he also admits other motives on why he joined this cast. “I’m also working on stealing Tilda Swinton away from George.” (Recall that Swinton won an Oscar after emoting opposite Clooney in “Michael Clayton.”)

Clooney says working with the Coens inspires him. “There are a handful of directors that you can just trust the minute you get the script to the time they say cut. With the Coens, you just believe in them and then get this amazing result. They never disappoint.”

Pitt had been hovering around the directors. “I’ve been knocking on the Coen brothers’ door for a few years,” he says. “So when they finally call you it’s really a nice turn of events.”

He was also eager to go for some laughs. “I felt like I’ve been doing comedies for years. Maybe they weren’t funny,” he says.

Pitt also stars in one of the most anticipated movies of the year, playing a character who ages backward in “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.”" I’ve been investing in American characters lately. I find America really, really interesting in this last decade. That’s been my focus,” he says.

“I’m not sure how to describe it. It’s a bit of a love letter to New Orleans, it’s a bit of a love letter to family and the people who make dents in your life along the way,” he says.

Clooney will star as a voice in “The Fantastic Mr. Fox.” He’s also starring in “Up in the Air” for “Juno” director Jason Reitman, about a professional who specializes in career transition counseling and tries to accumulate 1 million frequent flyer miles.

As for their personal lives, Clooney always remains mum. Pitt says that he and partner Angelina Jolie are working together, but not to join their names over a movie poster. “Angie and I are working together every day, I guarantee you,” he jokes.
