The American Film Market was in full swing this weekend and we’ve received this wonderful new still and great synopsis from George’s current film in process “The American”

Jack (George Clooney) is an artful assassin with a lengthy track record, constantly on the move and always watching his back. When an assignment goes wrong and a lover ends up dead, he vows that the next job will be his last. This final obligation takes him to a picturesque town nestled amongst lush Italian hills, its historical piazzas bursting with life. But to Jack, every location is a trap and every person a potential threat. Still, he surprises himself, enjoying confessional conversations over Armagnac with an insightful priest and slipping into an affair with a local beauty. But by letting his guard down, Jack may be tempting fate. A dangerous shadow-dweller shows every sign of closing in, and the mysterious woman who has hired him may not be all that she seems. As an increasingly wary Jack contemplates life, love and death in Italy, the film escalates into a climactic showdown through the cobbled maze of age-old alleyways. This sexy, suspenseful and intricate story blends intrigue and passionate romance within a searing morality tale to finally reveal the heart of this deeply private man.
Although in production, Focus Features International will be looking for buyers for The American at AFM 2009 (The 30th American Film Market) which runs Nov. 4-11 in Santa Monica. In the recent Variety issue they ran this ad of the Eight films they will be presenting.
I’ve updated the on the set pictures with George over the last few weeks. George has been in Italy filming for his latest film “The American” aka A Very Private Gentleman.
Status: Pre-Production
Release Date: 2010
Notes: Begins filming in Italy in September 2009
Adaption of the Martin Booth novel “A Very Private Gentleman”. The novel, which was adapted for the screen by Rowan Jaffe (”28 Days Later”), is described as a “creepy psychological suspense” story and follows an assassin “to a rural village in southern Italy where he poses as a quiet artist who paints miniatures of butterflies and has traveled to the area to capture a unique native specimen.” The assassin has but one more assignment to carry out though, of course, romantic entanglements and local friendships complicate his task.
Producers: Smokehouse, Focus Features
As you read in earlier posts, George mentioned during his visit to L’Aquila that he will be filming part of an upcoming movie in the L’Aquila area in September. While he didn’t actually mention the title of the film most sites are assuming that it will be “A Private Gentlemen”. To be on the safe side I did contact Stan and confirmed with him that it is “A Private Gentlemen” that will be filmed. Playlist goes into a bit more detail on the film/book and you can read it below along with some more information on George’s visit to L’Aquila yesterday.
George Clooney To Shoot ‘A Very Private Gentleman’ In Earthquake Torn Italian City, Premieres ‘The Fantastic Mr. Fox’ At His Own Cinema Opening
Anton Corbijn’s George Clooney led adaptation of the Martin Booth novel “A Very Private Gentleman” is set to being shooting this September after Clooney promised to return to the Italian city of L’Aquilla, ravaged by a recent earthquake, to shoot a film as a boost for its economy.
“We’ll shoot a film here at the end of September, in which I will act,” Clooney announced to journalists yesterday and while the actor neglected to mention the title of the project, the Corbijn helmed project which Clooney was attached to earlier this year would surely be it as it is set predominantly in “a rural village in southern Italy” and was to set to begin shooting this film anyway.

Also coming out of Clooney’s visit to disaster stricken Italy is news that city of San Demetrio will be host to a new “Nobel Peace Prize” cinema opened by Clooney with its inaugural film screening being Wes Anderson’s “The Fantastic Mr. Fox.” Clooney will be in attendance presumably along with co-star Bill Murray, who was also been in Italy bringing global awareness, to what could the world premiere of the film.
There’s news coming out of Cannes on a new project. George has signed on to star in an adaption of the Martin Booth novel “A Very Private Gentleman”. Source
Focus Features has set Clooney to star in “A Very Private Gentleman,” an adaptation of the Martin Booth novel to be directed by Anton Corbijn. Rowan Joffe is scripting the pic, which shoots in Italy this fall.
Clooney will play an assassin who hides out in an idyllic Italian town before carrying out a final assignment. He resists his usual aversion to human interaction, and his friendships and romantic entanglements complicate his mission.
Clooney and Smokehouse partner Grant Heslov will join Anne Carrey as producer.
