FROM HOLLYWOOD TO DARFUR

The charity of Clooney, Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle, and producer Jerry Weintraub does not stop on the movie screen. They also came to the world’s largest film festival to raise money and awareness for refugees in the Darfur region of Sudan.

“We’re not politicians. We’re not able to make decisions. We’re not able to do anything except bring attention to something, and that’s the thing we can do,” Clooney said.

“Kids are dying from diarrhoea … that just shouldn’t be in this day and age, and it’s that kind of thing that needs to be changed. Enough is enough,” Pitt added.

The United Nations says some 200,000 people have died and more than 2 million have fled their homes since the conflict in Darfur flared in 2003 when rebels took up arms against the government. Four “Ocean’s Thirteen” cast members — Clooney, Pitt, Cheadle and Damon — and Weintraub launched the Not On Our Watch Foundation to raise money and draw attention to the refugees. Earlier this week, they raised $10 million at a Cannes party, and in June they head to Los Angeles, Las Vegas and Chicago for similar charity events

Clooney took issue with anyone doubting his motives.

“At what point does anyone think anyone of us needs more publicity?” Clooney said. “I’m not going to defend what I think is doing the right thing … we are doing it because we all think we would be criminal if we didn’t take it a step further.”

CANNES, France – The dashing, debonair cast of “Ocean’s Thirteen” came to the Riviera for the world premiere of their starry heist sequel but were coy about whether “Thirteen” is the final chapter in the series. The glam guys, headed by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Matt Damon and Don Cheadle, seemed divided about diving in for a fourth “Ocean’s.” When asked whether there might be an “Ocean’s 58” or an “Ocean’s 69,” Clooney replied: “That would be a whole different ‘Ocean’s.’ ” Director Steve Soderbergh shook his head and added, “Never again.”

But Damon, who this summer bids farewell not just to Linus, the “Ocean’s” burglar, but amnesiac Jason Bourne as well, kept his options open, saying he was “more sad” that he might not get to do another flick with the “Ocean’s” posse. “The Bourne thing I’m definitely done with,” he added. “We’ve ridden that horse as much as we can. Outside of feeling like a prostitute for putting out two No. 3s in one year . . .” “Better than three No. 2s,” Clooney instantly noted to laughter. Damon agreed. But does his vow to not be Bourne again mean that Jason dies? “I’m not going to say. I could just not do them anymore,” Damon said, adding that “the character lives on in the books,” so another actor could be born as Bourne.

Although the cast spent most of the press conference joking around, the actors did inject a note of seriousness into the proceedings. Two nights before their premiere, Clooney and friends raised $9.2 million for Darfur relief efforts with a charity fund-raiser on a yacht at nearby Cap D’Antibes. “We knew we were coming here and it’s a great international platform and chance to raise money and raise awareness, specifically about Darfur,” Clooney said. “Don, Brad, Matt and I have all been in that region in the last year and it’s a been a concern of (ours) for the last few years. We find there is a lot more attention in the United States than internationally on this issue.” Added Damon: “We felt we’d be remiss if we didnt try to direct some of those resources to this life-and-death struggle.”

As for “Ocean’s,” the stars showed they still had a few tricks up their sleeves. In the third installment of the series, the two smoothies, Clooney and Pitt, go soft and teary-eyed watching an Oprah Winfrey show. The scene and its tough-guy sentimentality brought applause from the Cannes press.

The Daily Telegraph

Where are the turkeys? It’s a question that has been on the lips of many Cannes veterans this year. The 60th anniversary of the festival has passed by with barely a hint of controversy. Those of us who exult in the high drama of a previously venerated auteur getting laughed out of town, or of audiences booing films – as happened last year with Richard Kelly’s still-unreleased Shortland Tales – have been disappointed.

Many people thought that the world première of Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s 13, screening out of competition and adding a bit of Hollywood glitz to proceedings, might be that turkey. After all, Ocean’s 12 was an awfully lazy piece of self-indulgence. This time, George Clooney’s team of coders, safe-crackers and confidence tricksters decide to gang up on casino owner Al Pacino after he double-crosses Elliot Gould. The set-up lingo is as impenetrable as ever, but there are some fascinating insights into casino technology, and some of the banter – “You should settle down. Have a couple of kids,” Clooney tells Pitt – is agreeably knowing.

Is George Clooney hiding a new squeeze? There’s some buzz over at the Cannes Film Festival that the Ocean’s 13 star has a new girlfriend. Not only that, but she’s said to be in France with him right now. Meanwhile, as I write this, Clooney and the rest of the Ocean’s 13 gang have just landed at the Hotel du Cap after the movie’s black-tie premiere at the festival. While they popped into the premiere’s official after-party for a short visit, a source reports they hightailed it to the du Cap for an exclusive private dinner and shindig.
Girls steal the show at film’s premiere party THE Ocean’s boys were back in town at Cannes last night. But it was the ladies who stole the red carpet show as Ocean’s Thirteen made its debut at the famous film festival. Heart-throbs George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon all turned up for the premiere of the movie, the third in the series. Angelina Jolie, in Cannes to promote her own latest movie A Mighty Heart, led the glamour parade. She arrived, wearing shimmering yellow chiffon, on the arm of actor boyfriend Pitt and they waved to the cheering crowd. The Hollywood power couple were closely followed by pop princess Kylie Minogue, dressed in a black corsetstyle dress with see-through panels Also among the celebrities who graced the opening of the latest in the series of crime capers was Czech supermodel Petra Nemcova, 27, who used to date pop star James Blunt. Israeli model Hofit Golan, a business partner of British dress designer Scott Henshall, wore a gravity-defying creation in brilliant red. Ocean’s Thirteen, in which Clooney plays master thief Danny Ocean, also stars talk show host Oprah Winfrey and Al Pacino as a casino boss. Ocean’s regulars Andy Garcia, Don Cheadle and British comedian Eddie Izzard all make appearances. But Clooney hinted the film would be the last in the series. Asked if there would be an Ocean’s Fourteen, he said: “We’ve kind of sapped that tree.”

Those handsome “Ocean’s Thirteen” con artists – George Clooney, Brad Pitt (both at r.), Matt Damon and Don Cheadle – scored a cool $9.2 million on the French Riviera Tuesday night. But nobody’s calling the gendarmes.

The only people likely to complain about Clooney’s latest caper are the paparazzi. Most of them were left at the dock when the Oscar- winner and his crew shoved off on the 237-foot yacht that was the scene of the Not on Our Watch benefit for Darfur.

Among those piped aboard the RM Elegant (a Greek-registered vessel that ranks No. 49 on Power & Motor Yacht mag’s list of the world’s 100 largest yachts) were “Ocean’s Thirteen” castmates Ellen Barkin, Andy Garcia, Scott Caan and Elliott Gould and charity co- skipper Jerry Weintraub.

Everyone looked their best. Tan-n-tuxed Clooney “was a dead ringer for Cary Grant” in “To Catch a Thief,” says our spy. “Ellen looked fierce in a tight velvet dress. She has the most rocking body you’ve ever seen.” Cheadle, who told Foxnews.com’s Roger Friedman that he’ll direct himself in a biopic about Miles Davis, appeared to already be channeling the jazz legend’s style.

Guests paid as much as $25,000 a ticket for the Audi-sponsored cruise. Steven Spielberg personally chipped in $1 million and, we hear, OK! Magazine donated around $2 million (which may explain why it had the exclusive on coverage).

Pitt came without Angelina Jolie, who was having dinner with Mariane Pearl, whom she plays in “A Mighty Heart.” He met up later with them and daughter Shiloh, who’s about to celebrate her first birthday.

ROBIN ROBERTS (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Mm-hmm.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) …some of them dance and some of them talk to us right now. Of course, they are the ‘Ocean’s Thirteen” stars. It’s celebrating its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival. It’s going to be out June 8th. And joining us this morning, George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle, Matt Damon, and the man who has to wrangle this whole group, producer Jerry Weintraub. It’s great to talk to all of you this morning. Good morning.

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

Good morning.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

Good morning.

MATT DAMON (ACTOR)

Good morning.

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

Good morning.

JERRY WEINTRAUB (PRODUCER

Good morning, Diane.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

You do, Steven Soderbergh, the director, said once that it’s half directing a movie, half dealing with a kindergarten class. You all just sounded like a class saying hello there. But, Jerry, I wanna start with you on something serious because I know the publicity for the film, and the number of the fundraisers that have been done have been for Darfur and for the mission that so many of you all have for helping in Darfur. Tell me, you’ve got an announcement this morning? You’ve got some money coming?

JERRY WEINTRAUB (PRODUCER

Oh, yeah, we do. I’m gonna let George talk about that. But we, we had a wonderful fundraiser last night for Not On Our Watch Project that we’re all involved in, and these guys got me involved in it, and it’s going very, very well. We have a tremendous amount of support. But I think George ought to talk about that and everybody else.

GRAPHICS: GOOD MORNING AMERICA EXCLUSIVE

GRAPHICS: THE BOYS ARE BACK!

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

We had a big night last night. We got – we raised a lot of money. Big one, the big surprise for us was Steven Spielberg donated $1 million last night. That really kicked us over the top and got us, what’s the number now?

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

We’re up to 9.2, I think, is the official number.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

$9.2 million.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

Whoa.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

Still climbing.

JERRY WEINTRAUB (PRODUCER

Nine million, two hundred thousand.

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

We’re very happy.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

A lot of money. And we’re, and, and it was a really great thing that he did. He’s, he’s been very helpful with all of this. He’s been, you know, he’s working in China right now, and hopefully, he’s gonna be able to help us – have China have some influence on, on – because of the – Beijing Olympics, on the policies in Darfur. But the, but the $9.5 million is for the refugee camps, and we wanna try and immediately effect some, some change and help some people survive through the next few months while we’re there.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(VO) Well, that’s an awesome achievement.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

That’s our goal.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(VO) That’s fantastic. So much money.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) And as, and I know that it continues, the work that you’ve done, because we’ve seen George Clooney going before the United Nations asking for more peacekeeping forces, Don Cheadle has testified before subcommittees, so the work is just beginning. Let me ask a little bit now about the reason you are there in Cannes, on the beach in Cannes. And I know behind you, there are all sorts of paparazzi. I – all morning long, we’ve been watching them pull up on the beach behind you and, and film from the boat.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(VO) There they are, sitting right behind you on the boat right now as we talk. So let me talk about the movie. As I understand this very complex plot, right? You have to bankrupt a casino in Las Vegas, and you have to do it on opening night in a record amount of time and the bad guy is Pacino himself?

GRAPHICS: PITT, CLOONEY, DAMON & CHEADLE

GRAPHICS: STARS FIGHT TO SAVE MILLIONS

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Mr. Cheadle?

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

That’s pretty good.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Word has reached me all the way here in New York City, Times Square, that you do the, the ultimate – Al Pacino imitation.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

Oh, no.

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

Being that I’ve only studied the – curse words that he does in his movies, the, the infamous blow up scenes, I, I don’t think it’s appropriate for a morning audience.

MATT DAMON (ACTOR)

That is a great, that is a great evasive tactic.

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

Good dodge.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Wait a minute.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

Oh, yeah. That was, that was good.

JERRY WEINTRAUB (PRODUCER

Good duck, Don.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) You, you think I’m a pushover, Don Cheadle. I would, at least, I wanna see the face.

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

Never you, Diane. Never you.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Give me a Pacino face.

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

You know, it’s – if I were here – that’s about as far as I can go. I hear he has people in the streets, and I don’t really wanna get beat up by Al’s henchmen. So (inaudible).

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Okay. Brad, you, some of you were – well, I think you’re all in disguises of various kind. But we have yours to show everyone this morning.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(VO) It’s a little like…

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

Oh, good.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(VO) …Garth from ‘Saturday Night Live.” Is, is this the inner Brad Pitt? Are we looking at the true Brad Pitt?

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

I was trying to, I was, you know, I’m feeling a little older these days. I was trying to relive the glory days of ‘Legends of the Fall.” I failed miserably.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Well, feeling a little older, my understanding is that in this movie, it is Matt who has to go out and get the girl? Matt, so Brad is just…

MATT DAMON (ACTOR)

Yes.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) …he’s forfeiting now? He’s out of that, out of that race?

MATT DAMON (ACTOR)

Well, these guys are heading into their golden years. So it was really down to me to – and the – girl in this case is Ellen Barkin, so we’re really lucky to have her. She’s another addition to this one, and she’s just fantastic. So we had a lot of fun working on this one.

CLIP FROM “OCEAN’S THIRTEEN”

MATT DAMON (ACTOR)

I, I’m in disguise here in this scene with this nose. It’s, it’s my, my contribution. I, I, I’d say, on behalf of all of us, we went deeper into our characters on this one than we, than we did on the other two.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) And how…

MATT DAMON (ACTOR)

And it’s, really, we did a lot of soul-searching.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Yeah. And how deep would that be…

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

Good, good answer. Good answer.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) …you know, when you go deep?

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

So deep, so deep, it’s, it’s really hard to describe.

MATT DAMON (ACTOR)

I’m – having trouble…

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

Just follow the veneer.

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

Yeah.

MATT DAMON (ACTOR)

…coming out of, coming out of character. I actually, in the, in the three films, I think I actually played three different characters. I’m not really sure what I did.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

We don’t know what he did either.

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

It’s somewhere in between those three.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Yes it’s – well, speaking of your waning years, I want you to know, George Clooney, that we have read non-stop press, I’m not kidding, it’s the headline all over Europe, that you’ve had eye surgery?

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

You know, I just – let me, let me fix this.

JERRY WEINTRAUB (PRODUCER

Found out.

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

I just wanna say…

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

Help a brother out, will you?

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

…that, that it doesn’t show on film.

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

I mean this was up close.

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

You really cannot tell unless you’re…

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

You can be close, so…

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

You can be close.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

You can be close, I think.

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

…(inaudible) proximity. But it did (inaudible). You know, we should all support him on this.

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

And he only had one eye done. (Inaudible). When they said eyes, it’s just one eye.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

Well, I, I figured I wanted to try it first.

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

Yeah. Yeah.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Yeah.

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

Give it a test run. See how that (inaudible).

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) I take that as a denial, and I’ll move right on. Okay. Before I leave you, speaking of…

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

(Inaudible) look good.

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

(Inaudible) confirmation.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Speaking, speaking of Ellen Barkin, who is the girl, a girl, what a girl she is, I just wanna read a quote for all of you so that you can know what she has said.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

Uh-oh.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) She said she was so happy to be invited into this movie, so happy to be part of your party, and mostly, so happy she hadn’t slept with any of you?

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

This is true.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

That is a lie.

MATT DAMON (ACTOR)

Well, she can’t make that claim anymore.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

She, she got a little drunk last night in Cannes.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Well, again, we…

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

Well, she thinks she slept with us.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Yeah. I suppose, Jerry Weintraub hasn’t spoken up on this either?

JERRY WEINTRAUB (PRODUCER

No. No, no, no, no, no.

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

He’s smart.

JERRY WEINTRAUB (PRODUCER

I love her.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(OC) Oh, all right. Well, again, we thank you all for being with us this morning. And before we leave, is, is there a shot of the beach there? Because somebody told me that there were a lot of guys out on the beach in Speedos, and so I assume that you all will be getting the spandex out and heading down to the beach soon?

BRAD PITT (ACTOR)

Heading that way now.

DON CHEADLE (ACTOR)

As soon as this interview is over.

DIANE SAWYER (ABC NEWS)

(VO) Yeah.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

Oh, there’s, wait, there, there’s, there’s Matt now.

MATT DAMON (ACTOR)

There’s Jerry.

GEORGE CLOONEY (ACTOR)

And as I write this, the hotel is packed with the ultrafamous. Angelina Jolie had been hanging out with friends in the lobby but almost went unrecognized because she was so dressed down. But then she got up and everyone saw her as she greeted Matt Damon and his wife, Luciana, who were coming in from the Ocean’s Thirteen benefit aimed at ending genocide in the Darfur region of western Sudan. A few minutes later, Brad Pitt, George Clooney and Don Cheadle walked in, followed by Andy Garcia and Ellen Barkin.

Clooney & Co gamble on Ocean’s 13 in Cannes
By Bob Tourtellotte Reuters - CANNES, France (Reuters) – The men of “Ocean’s Thirteen” — Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Matt Damon and the rest — rolled into Cannes this week betting its notoriously tough film critics would declare their movie a winner.

The follow-up to two previous “Ocean’s” capers about a group of con artists led by suave Danny Ocean (Clooney) and Rusty Ryan (Pitt), who swindle money from bad guys, opens at the world’s top film festival on Thursday and lands in theatres in June. A Cannes debut represents a risk for a major Hollywood movie like “Ocean’s” because reviewers in the French Riviera resort tend to throw their support behind European, Asian and U.S. art house films, and foresake Hollywood studio fare like “Ocean’s.”

<lj-cut>

But Pitt, Clooney and the gang defended “Ocean’s” as a form of pure entertainment that deserved its place alongside films like Cannes opening night movie “My Blueberry Nights” from Chinese director Wong Kar Wai. “There is a fair argument for deep and thought-provoking … types of films as well as pure, unadulterated entertainment,” Pitt told Reuters.

Damon, another of the “Ocean’s” stars, said: “You still want the bigger movies to be good.”

But sometimes the critics in Cannes misread the mood of the public when it comes to big-budget Hollywood films.

Last year, studio film “The Da Vinci Code” opened the festival with a smattering of boos from Cannes audiences, poor reviews and newspaper headlines that immediately trumpeted the poor reception. Yet “Da Vinci” went on to haul in $232 million in its initial weekend following the Cannes premiere, and it still ranks as No. 4 on the list of all-time worldwide debuts.

PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT?

With years of movie experience behind it, the “Ocean’s” crew knows as well as anyone that the marketing muscle of a major Hollywood studio can often guarantee big box office, despite what could be a round of poor reviews at Cannes. With that box office logic in mind, the stars were happy to joke about what awaited them.

“It’s really not about the film, as much as (winning) the award,” Clooney quipped, referring to the coveted Palme d’Or handed out to the best film in Cannes. “Ocean’s Thirteen” is not in competition and so does not qualify for the award.

“We think we’re going to win,” joked Damon.

In the film, the follow-up to “Ocean’s Eleven” and “Ocean’s Twelve,” Danny reunites the crew that includes intellectual geek Linus Caldwell (Damon) and mechanical whiz Basher Tarr (Don Cheadle) to exact revenge on Vegas casino operator Willy Bank (Al Pacino). Bank has swindled a senior member of Ocean’s crew, Reuben Tishkoff (Elliot Gould), out of his share of a new casino Bank is building. The underhanded thievery gives Tishkoff a heart attack and sends him into deep despair. Ocean calls the men together to help rouse the old man back to life, and the way to do it is to hit Bank’s new casino on the night of its grand opening.
