AUGUSTA — Augusta native and international film star George Clooney is heading for the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences Awards, again.

Clooney was nominated Tuesday for a best actor Oscar trophy for his work in the movie “Up in the Air,” in which he plays a frequent flyer junkie, traveling first class while crossing the country as a corporate axe man to downsize companies.

Clooney’s father, Nick Clooney, a former news broadcaster and columnist, is proud of his son and his performances.

George’s mother Nina Clooney, Kentucky Film Commission chairperson, attended the Hollywood premier of “Up in the Air” with George and later viewed it with Nick.

“It was a great and subtle performance,” Nick Clooney said on Tuesday after learning of the nomination. “(George) keeps growing as an actor. It was a stunning performance by him and the other actors.”

A graduate of Augusta High School, George Clooney broadened his acting resume from reoccurring roles in television situation comedies to the heart-throb surgeon on the medical drama “ER.”

Entering motion pictures, Clooney quickly established himself as a leading man.

People magazine labeled him “The Sexiest Man Alive” twice.

Clooney’s versatility and an adventurous nature has continued to bring his acting, and directing ventures acclaim.

“Most of us, in our careers, achieve a plateau where we are comfortable staying. We settle into what is comfortable,” Nick Clooney said. “George is always stretching the limits and taking chances. In that way he continues to grow.”

(AFP) LOS ANGELES — The race for next year’s Oscars got under way Monday as nomination ballot papers were posted to the 5,777 voters who will decide the movie industry’s most prestigious awards.

Voting members of the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences receive ballot papers roughly one month ahead of the nominations announcement on February 2. Ballots must be returned by January 23, the Academy said.

A second round of ballots will be mailed out after the nominations announcement where members will cast their decisive votes to determine the winners at the March 7 awards in Hollywood.

Next year’s Oscars race is expected to be one of the most wide open in years while the battle for the coveted best picture statuette has been expanded to include 10 nominees.

Recession-drama “Up In the Air”, starring George Clooney, and James Cameron’s science-fiction fantasy epic “Avatar” are among the leading early contenders for the top honor, according to pundits.

A record 20 films have been submitted for consideration in Oscar’s animated feature film category.

The surfeit of entries is likely to force the Academy to nominate five animated films for only the second time since the category was created in 2001. Academy rules state that if fewer than 16 films are submitted in the category, only three can be nominated.

More nominations in the category could prove helpful to smaller films included among the entries.

Studio films include Disney’s “A Christmas Carol,” “The Princess and the Frog,” “Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure,” Disney/Pixar’s “Up” and Disney/Studio Ghibli’s “Ponyo”; DreamWorks Animation/Paramount’s “Monsters vs. Aliens”; Focus Features’ “Coraline” and “9”; Fox’s “The Dolphin — Story of a Dreamer,” “Fantastic Mr. Fox” and “Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel” and Fox/Blue Sky’s “Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs”; Lionsgate’s “Battle for Terra”; Sony’s “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs” and “Planet 51”; and Summit Entertainment’s.”Astro Boy.”

Indie submissions include: IFC’s “Mary & Max”; Kandor Graphics and YaYa! Films’ “The Missing Lynx”; GKids’ “The Secret of Kells,” from Les Armateurs, Viva Film, Cartoon Saloon and France 2; and Zeitgeist Films’ “A Town Called Panic.”

The Academy cautioned, however, that “Squeakquel,” “Dreamer,” “Mr. Fox,” “Planet 51,” “Princess,” “Kells” and “Panic” have not yet had required Los Angeles qualifying runs. Nominations for the 82nd Annual Academy Awards will be unveiled Feb. 2.

George Cloones – Up in the Air
Clooney plays a career transition counselor, who doesn’t really has a personal life and who then gets transitioned himself to another job. Clooney is popular so we better not count him out yet.

BEVERLY HILLS — For the first time this award season, Oscar was smiling.
High spirits reigned at the Academy Award nominees luncheon Monday afternoon as positive word from the writers’ strike negotiations led many to believe that this annual low-key gathering would not be their only chance tocelebrate together.

George Clooney, a best-actor contender for Michael Clayton, has pressured both sides to make a deal that would at least allow the Oscars to happen. He noted that even a tentative contract needs to be ratified by the guild board. “I think it’s got a good shot at it, and I think it’s a great sign. It looks very good,” the actor-writer-director said, while noting that he still would not attend the awards without a deal in place. “I’ve never crossed a picket line, and would never. I belong to six unions, so it makes it hard.” Clooney worked hard to keep the afternoon light, particularly during the nominees’ pre-lunch news conference. After fielding a particularly heavy question from a reporter, he told the small group of reporters, “I don’t know if you could hear her, but she asked, uh, how come I look so good up close?”

He also jokingly taunted Daniel Day-Lewis, regarded as a front-runner in Clooney’s acting category for his misanthropic oilman in There Will Be Blood. Day-Lewis was among the few nominees who didn’t attend the luncheon. “I’ll tell you, I don’t like Daniel Day-Lewis. I don’t know if you guys have met him, but … I, uh, caught him stealing,” Clooney said. “He screws the whole thing up because he’s so good.”

Clooney abandoned his table for much of the afternoon to chum around with No Country supporting actor Javier Bardem, both of them corralling the Coens when they passed by.

Clooney, who noted that he came to fame later in life, in his mid-30s, said the young nominees don’t need any advice from him. “I can’t give Ellen Page advice, she’s too smart. I need to find some dumb actor.”
